[Open to a husband and wife in a kitchen unpacking groceries.]
Husband: Did you check the propane?
Wife: Yeah.
[The husband reaches into his shirt pocket, pulls out a wad of cash and hands a single bill to his wife. He stuffs the remaining money back into his shirt pocket.]
[The wife looks at the money – confused.]
Wife: What’s this?
Husband: I cashed the cheque. Consider it a monthly allowance.
Wife (surprised): What about the rest of the money?
[The husband pats his shirt’s pocket.]
Husband: I’m holding on to it for safekeeping.
Wife (shocked): But it doesn’t even belong to you.
[Frustrated by her husband’s unwillingness to reason the wife walks away, revealing a sad and forlorn elderly woman sitting in the background.]
[The husband looks over at the elderly woman and says,]
Husband: Hey she’s my mother. I know what’s best for her, alright?!

[As the camera remains locked on the front hall, we hear the events proceed in the other room.]
[The mother begins to yell,]
Mother (furious): That’s it!! That’s the last time I trip over that thing!
SFX: SLAP!
SFX: girl crying
[The crying daughter comes running back into the front hall and up the stairs.]
[The camera begins to move into the adjoining living room. As it does, we see the angry mother standing over an elderly man who is sitting on a couch holding his face in pain. There is a cane lying on the floor.]
