Ontario shows gratitude to war veterans

McGuinty Government Sponsors Veteran Appreciation Events

Ontario will sponsor Veteran Appreciation Days in 10 communities this year to honour the sacrifices of veterans.

The kick-off event in Barrie today coincides with the anniversary of the Allies’ liberation of Europe during the Second World War in 1945 (VE Day).

Ontario also supports the heritage of veterans through initiatives such as:

“We are proud to honour the legacy of our military heroes by supporting Veteran Appreciation Days in communities across the province,” said Aileen Carroll, Minister Responsible for Seniors and Minister of Culture.

“Veterans Appreciation Day recognizes the important sacrifices made by veterans in Ontario and allows community members to show their appreciation outside of Remembrance Week,” said Jeremy Diamond, the Dominion Institute’s Director of Programs.

  • About 80,000 of these veterans live in Ontario.
  • Veterans Appreciation Day is organized by the Dominion Institute, a registered charity that promotes the understanding of Canadian heritage.
