International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS)

The Heritage Properties and Museum Programs Unit in carrying out the Ministry's role for heritage is guided by international standards and practice. ICOMOS International (International Council on Monuments and Sites) is the forum for such guidance. The International Charter for the Conservation and Restoration of Monuments and Sites (the Venice Charter) provided for the creation of ICOMOS in 1964. Since its establishment, ICOMOS is often the organization of choice under which to develop and or promote heritage charters and standards.

ICOMOS Canada is one of the 80 National Committees that are members of ICOMOS International. ICOMOS Canada has developed two important charters: The Appleton Charter for the Protection and Enhancement of the Built Environment, 1983 and; the Deschambault Declaration - The Charter for the Preservation of Quebec's Heritage.
