An Overview

The Ontario government is a participant in a federal, provincial and territorial partnership aimed at identifying and conserving historic places across Canada.

The Historic Places Initiative is helping to further an appreciation of Ontario’s heritage by promoting its historic places and encouraging heritage conservation and rehabilitation efforts.

Key components of the initiative are the Canadian Register of Historic Places and the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada. A federal financial incentive, the Commercial Heritage Properties Incentive Fund, was also introduced as a pilot for a possible federal tax incentive for commercial heritage properties.

Canadian Register of Historic Places

In Ontario, the Ministry of Culture is responsible for nominating historic places to the Canadian Register of Historic Places. To be nominated by the province, a place must be formally recognized under the Ontario Heritage Act through municipal designation by-law, ownership by the Ontario Heritage Trust, or a heritage conservation easement. It must also meet eligibility criteria and documentation standards.

The federal government is responsible for nominating National Historic Sites and federally protected or owned heritage properties.

A listing on the Canadian Register of Historic Places recognizes and celebrates the importance of a historic place to its community, province or nation. It is an honourific listing and does not place additional controls on the historic place.

Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada

Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada has established accepted conservation principles and practices for heritage conservation projects, including those receiving federal funding through the Commercial Heritage Properties Incentive Fund. Ontario has endorsed the Standards and Guidelines document as a valuable heritage conservation tool.
