Using the arts to educate

Arts education helps our young people build their confidence, express their individuality and creativity and improves how well they learn other school subjects. Studies show that students who participate in the arts develop better math, literacy and writing skills.

What is arts education?

Arts education involves:

  • Learning about the arts.
Students learn how to draw, write creatively, play a musical instrument, act in a play, and so on.
  • Learning through the arts.
Students use an art form to learn about other school subjects, such as using dance to learn math

How do the arts benefit our students?

Research has shown that young people who participate in arts and music not only have higher math and science scores but are also able to solve problems more quickly than those who are not exposed to the arts.

Arts education helps our students develop their ability to listen and observe, to become more self-aware and self-confident and to solve problems in creative ways.

How are we supporting arts education in our schools?
Our Arts Education Partnership Initiative achieves two important goals:

  • It encourages our children to participate in and learn about the arts
  • It helps classroom teachers use the arts to give their students a better understanding of other core subjects

The Ontario government also sponsors the Royal Conservatory of Music’s Learning Through the Arts program.  It uses art and music to teach subjects like math, science, history and geography.
