STRENGTHENING ONTARIO’S FILM INDUSTRY

McGuinty Government Invests in Canadian Film Centre

Ontario is helping to grow its entertainment industry with a significant capital investment in the Canadian Film Centre.

The Canadian Film Centre (CFC) is the country’s largest institution for advanced training in film, television, and new media. Ontario is helping to ensure the centre remains competitive in the fast-growing global entertainment market by providing $2.5 million to improve its facilities. The funding addresses capital repair and expansion needs to support the centre’s advanced training programs.

This funding is in addition to Ontario’s $10 million investment in the CFC announced in the 2005 provincial budget.

By supporting the development of our best creative talent, we help strengthen Ontario’s position in the rapidly growing cultural industries,” said Culture Minister Aileen Carroll, who made the funding announcement at the CFC annual barbecue, which is held each year during the Toronto International Film Festival.

"Ontario’s support furthers our leadership role in developing world-class talent. We are thrilled that the Ontario government recognizes the cultural and economic contribution the Canadian Film Centre makes to the province,” said Slawko Klymkiw, Executive Director of the CFC.

QUICK FACTS

• Two CFC films have been selected for the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), which runs September 4-13.
• The festival has an estimated annual economic impact of over $67 million including benefits to tourism, retail, travel and firm sales.
• TIFF is one of the world’s most important film festivals, accrediting over a thousand international media for the event.
• Since 1988, the CFC has graduated over 1000 film directors, editors, writers, producers, show runners and new media content developers.
• Nearly 60 per cent of CFC alumni live and work in Ontario.
